We have just concluded the festivities in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary, in the idyllic setting of the homonymous Monopoli and always attended church in the town. The party, traditionally in the countryside mark the beginning of autumn, closing the festivals and celebrations in the countryside and in cities that only resurfaced in December with the Immaculate Conception, in an atmosphere full of Christmas. Devotion to the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary of Pompeii dates back to 1208, when San Domenico - always shown at the foot of the Madonna - was given the apparition of Mary holding a crown of the Holy Rosary. First under the name Maria della Vittoria - in memory of the victory over the Ottomans at Lepanto, obtained thanks to the tradition Rosaries announced before each battle, and then with the final name of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Virgin is depicted with a blue robe and Child in the act of giving a rosary to St. Dominic. Pompeii is the home of the largest Italian shrine dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, is venerated in a famous picture painted in the eighteenth century. Much is heard and recited the famous Supplication to Our Lady Pompeii, written by Blessed Bartolo Longo, a great promoter of Marian devotion and the image of the town bell. In Monopoly the veneration of Our Lady of the Rosary is fairly widespread, and the dwellings in which there is at least an image of Our Lady of the Rosary, especially in the countryside, are many. Just in the countryside, there are two districts in which we celebrate at the same time, the Virgin of Pompeii: Cozzana district, with traditional religious and civic celebrations, one of the biggest holidays of the year in the countryside - if not the largest, Balice and the district, bordering Castellana Grotte, where there is a beautiful seventeenth century church with a delicate taste and heavenly, the chapel where the late Don Agostino Bagordo had chosen to celebrate his last Masses. There are no civil celebrations, but the solemn Triduum and the two Sunday with celebrations in the evening, a panel organized by the elderly ladies of the district can only bring the faithful and tourists in an ancient world, made of homemade taralli and rosaries, incense rising towards the sky and glasses of wine early reduction in the hungry stomachs of the lucky customers.
