On 30 January 1948 Mahatma Gandhi was killed with three shots in New Delhi during the morning prayer. The murderess is Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist fanatic, Gandhi accusing them of collusion with the Muslims. That day the prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, said: "The light is gone from our lives, the darkness has prevailed everywhere."
